Improvement of warehouse loader operation system
The DigitalMara team worked on expanding the functionality of a Warehouse Management System. The client is a logistics vendor that provides warehouse services to various companies. The system allows the company to collect statistics on the movement of loaders in the warehouse, to optimize their routes.
About the client
The client owns warehouses and rents them out to various companies that store different types of cargo. Movement of goods across the warehouses is carried out with the help of loaders. And here comes the challenge: one loader can contain a variety of cargo: fragile, heavy, and in various dimensions. It’s vital to determine the optimal algorithm for movement around the warehouse and the optimal use of resources.
Approach
The vendor already had an algorithm for optimizing the movement of loaders across the warehouse and collecting static data about their moves. The solution was tested in one warehouse, and the vendor wished to scale it, so as to cover the rest of the company’s warehouses. The vendor also wanted a user dashboard that would bring together all the data from its warehouses and loaders in one place.
The main challenge was that each warehouse had a different shape, dimensions and shelving placement, and therefore required its own database, routes and statistics. Our team started by expanding the algorithm capabilities and adapting it to each warehouse. We upgraded two main functions: visualization and storage of statistics of loader routes, and analysis and optimization of loader routes for a given period.
In addition, we updated the interface to make it more intuitive and user-friendly. We added all available warehouses to a drop-down menu, to allow the user to choose the appropriate warehouse, open its map, see the statistics, and then choose a route optimization plan according to given criteria.
Results
The client got a solution for all their warehouses with a single control center. Warehouse users obtained the opportunity to improve the placement and movement of cargo.
